Messi’s World Cup win has put him back into contention
FIFA has announced the 14 names in the running to win The Best 2022 World Player of the Year Award: Julian Alvarez, Jude Bellingham, Karim Benzema, Kevin de Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Achraf Hakimi, Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mane, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Luka Modric, Neymar, Mohamed Salah and Vinicius Junior.
The award recognizes the best footballer of the calendar year 2022, so both Karim Benzema (reigning Ballon d’Or, LaLiga and Champions League winner) and Leo Messi (World Cup winner and World Cup Ballon d’Or) appear to have the edge in the race.
The voting period for the February 27 ceremony begins today, Thursday January 12. The votes are divided into four parts: 25 percent from journalists; 25 percent from captains of the World Cup teams; 25 percent from coaches; and the remaining 25 percent from the fans. MARCA is, as every year, in charge of representing Spain’s vote through its director, Juan Ignacio Gallardo.
