Online gaming trends foreshadow the direction of iGaming and tech industry in Africa – The Star Kenya

• Africa is becoming one of the hotspots for tech events through its development and gaming trends. The result? The first SiGMA Africa Event in Nairobi.
Africa is becoming more and more of an iGaming hub because of online gaming trends. Since the COVID pandemic, online gambling games and virtual sports betting have seen a huge increase in usage. That is why iGaming companies and online casinos are taking a special interest in the continent. Some of the biggest iGaming events of the year are planned in Africa which will further deepen the development of this industry.
Moreover, it is evident that the African continent is making huge strides in technological development over recent years. Its technological advancement has brought attention from tech companies who are investing more and more in projects based in Africa. Tech solutions are not only bringing outside funding from the rest of the world but are actively helping combat the most important issues the continent is dealing with. In this article, I will take a look at why Africa is becoming so important for iGaming and tech companies and show events that have a goal of contributing to further development.
Technology is advancing more rapidly than ever before, leading to new opportunities and job markets. Emerging technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) have been hailed as a game-changer that can hasten the economic transformation of developing nations, according to recent studies. Considering the young demographics of most African countries, these technologies could prove to be very beneficial for young people entering the workforce.
Many African governments have started to implement policies that promote technological development, especially in sectors that are a big part of their economy. For example, Kenya is investing in a digital superhighway that will connect various parts of the country and boost agriculture through its connectivity. Since agriculture is one of the main drivers of the economy in many African countries, these technological developments could bring rapid economical advancement. Furthermore, creating such an environment invites big players in the tech industry to enter the African market and push its development further.
The iGaming industry has experienced a massive boom in recent years, as the pandemic has increased online gaming trends, especially in online gambling. Because there were no sports to bet on, gambling companies had a hard time retaining customers, which would be very detrimental to the economy of African countries as it is a big business market.
However, iGaming came to help. In order to keep the lights on and stay afloat until life began to return to normal, operators in Africa turned to virtual games. Virtual sports are video games that feature realistic odds and lifelike images that are computer-generated representations of sporting events. But now that gamblers are aware of the numerous advantages of virtual sports, this trend doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Several important African nations, like Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, are teeming with youthful, tech-savvy sports bettors which is why it is logical that they become hosts of the biggest iGaming events in Africa.
Because of these technological developments and gaming trends in Africa, SiGMA Group has decided to host its first SiGMA Africa Event in Nairobi, Kenya. It will take place from the 16th to the 19th of January of 2023 and will feature big-time players from the tech and iGaming industries.
The SiGMA Conference brings together the top figures in the iGaming industry and beyond for 3 days of networking, panels, workshops, and awards for true pioneers of iGaming in the continent, with many African nations leading the pack when it comes to mobile gaming, sports betting, blockchain, and other cutting edge aspects of 4IR. Because of Africa’s great economic potential, expanding and youthful population, capacity to advance technologically, and recent economic changes, SiGMA Group was persuaded to function as a center of networking for the continent’s top thinkers in order to catalyze this new period of wealth.
There is an extensive list of tech specialists and iGaming experts that will share their knowledge during the conference. Some of these are:

And many others!
The Africa Gaming Awards will take place in Nairobi on January 16, 2023. This lavish awards evening will honor top players in the iGaming business in a celebration of accomplishment and provide first-rate networking opportunities. The glamorous event will highlight some of the most fascinating and innovative initiatives to transform the iGaming industry and will also include an art auction, with all proceeds going to the SiGMA Foundation for a range of philanthropic initiatives.
There are a variety of awards that will be given out highlighting some of the best companies in the business. Some of the awards are Game Provider of the Year, Online Operator of the Year, Sportsbook Operator of the Year, Marketing Campaign of the Year, and others.
For every event they make, SiGMA also offers the SiGMA Pitch competition which sees over 100 startups competing for prizes ranging in value of up to 500,000€ in equity investment. Judges will select the best 10 pitches received to compete in the final leg of the conference in which they will receive a booth at the expo, consultancy from important players in the industry, PR and networking opportunities, and leads to potential customers and investors.
The winner gets twice as big of a booth at the expo, office space, recruitment and marketing services, and equity investment opportunities. Through this competition, SiGMA ensures that the future of the industry is in good hands and that further development of these sectors will continue to bloom on the African continent.
In conclusion, Africa has a large potential in both tech and iGaming industries. The technological development over recent years has been quite rapid, and the gaming trends of the younger population show that the market is quite tech-savvy and has great potential. SiGMA organizing one of its premium events in Nairobi is just a confirmation that the tech and iGaming industries have a lot to offer on the African continent and that it might become one of the world-leading tech hubs in the future.
