MP from PAS should be opposition leader, says analyst – Free Malaysia Today

PETALING JAYA: An MP from PAS should be made the opposition leader in the Dewan Rakyat, contends Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) lecturer Izani Zain.
He argues that the norm is that the opposition leader should be from the party with the most seats.
Izani contends that PAS won 43 seats at last month’s general election (GE15) and has the largest representation in the Dewan Rakyat.
However, election records show that the 43 seats were won by PAS members contesting as candidates from Perikatan Nasional (PN), while Bersatu members won 31 seats, giving PN a total of 74 seats.
PN has named its secretary-general, Hamzah Zainudin from Bersatu, to fill the position of opposition leader.
Izani said Hamzah was seen as a capable candidate with the ability and experience in Parliament. However, he contended that the position of opposition leader must be filled by a PAS representative.

Yesterday, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan was reported to have said that the decision to name Hamzah was made at a recent meeting of PN’s component party leaders.
Another analyst said Hamzah’s appointment is expected to provide a good check and balance in the country’s democratic process.
Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin of Universiti Teknologi Mara said he hopes Hamzah can prioritise the interests of the public over personal issues as Malaysians have grown tired of the country’s political uncertainty over the past few years.
“Hamzah’s appointment is expected to bring about a change in discussions and debates (to one) based on facts, not emotion,” he said.
Last week, Terengganu Amanah Youth chief Zamir Ghazali had proposed that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang be appointed the opposition leader.
