Ian Wright has told The Kelly and Wrighty Show that Granit Xhaka has been the most improved player in the Premier League following his stunning form for Arsenal so far this season.
Few saw this campaign coming from the Gunners. Mikel Arteta’s men have bounced back from the setback of last season to now lead the way in the Premier League.
Several of their players have been revelations. Ben White has been an inspired choice at right-back. Takehiro Tomiyasu’s best moments have probably come on the left. And Gabriel Martinelli has arguably been the best winger in the Premier League.
But few players have managed to change opinions quite like Xhaka.
Of course, the Swiss has been heavily criticised during his time since his £30 million move to North London. And some of that criticism has been justified.
However, Arteta stuck by the midfielder. And he is now being vindicated in stunning fashion. Xhaka has been absolutely unbelievable in the middle of the park alongside Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard.
The presence of the other two players has allowed Xhaka to play with a lot more freedom. And he is, without doubt, playing the best football of his Arsenal career.
Wright was discussing the most improved player in the Premier League this season. And he opted for the Arsenal man.
“I’ve got Xhaka. I think Xhaka, what he’s done, now he’s playing further up in the field,” he told The Kelly and Wrighty Show.
“All the managers at Arsenal have always had certain faith in him. But he’s been playing further back where it doesn’t suit him. Now we’re seeing him up front, more in that area where he can create and do what he does for Switzerland. It’s got to be Xhaka for me.”
It is impossible to argue with Wright’s pick. Obviously, Newcastle fans will back Miguel Almiron. And again, you can have few complaints with that shout.
Xhaka absolutely deserves all of the plaudits coming his way. As previously mentioned, he received a lot of criticism during the first few years of his spell at the Emirates.
But something has now clicked. He is relishing the role he has on the pitch, as well as amongst the Arsenal squad.
And remarkably, it now seems that he has become a real fan favourite.
