Hollingshed Representing Puerto Rico in FIBA World Cup – CUBuffs.com

September 20, 2022
SYDNEY, Australia Former Colorado standout Mya Hollingshed will be back on the court this week, playing for Puerto Rico in the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup set for Sept. 22 – Oct. 1 in Australia.
Hollingshed is one of 12 players on the Puerto Rican roster and will open play against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday (6:20 p.m. MT/ESPN+).
The Puerto Rico Basketball Federation received approval to naturalize Hollingshed, a Houston, Texas, native, back in July.
“This is a historic event for the National Women’s Program. For a long time, we have been seeking to nationalize a player who will help us continue to climb and progress as a program, and have important pieces to compete against the best teams in the world…The work of Yum Ramos and the entire staff of the program bears fruit by approving the nationalization of Mya (Hollingshed)”, Puerto Rico’s women’s national team coach Jerry Batista stated at the time.
Hollingshed wrapped up her career as a Buff in 2022, leaving Boulder as the program’s sixth all-time leading scorer (1,681 pts). She was a two-time All-Pac-12 selection to go along with back-to-back WBCA honorable mention All-America honors.
“She has a WNBA player level, with many offensive resources. She has always been very interested in playing for Puerto Rico, she has seen the development of the program and is very excited to be able to represent our country. She is a young player who can give us many years of good basketball”, Batista added in the same statement.
Hollingshed was drafted eighth overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces but was waived before the start of the season.
Puerto Rico is in Group A and will take on Team USA, Belgium, China and Korea. Four teams from Group A and Group B will advance to the quarterfinals. A draw will determine the pairings of the Quarterfinals. The two best-ranked teams of each group (group A and group B) will be drawn against the two teams ranked third and fourth in the other group.
All of the World Cup games will be available on ESPN+.
