The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3v3 Asia Cup will be held in Singapore at Marina Bay Sands’ Event Plaza from Jul 6 to Jul 10.
The upcoming event marks the return of the Asia Cup since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the second time a FIBA 3×3 competition is being held in Singapore.
There will be a record total of 53 teams – 30 men’s and 23 women’s – competing in the upcoming tournament. Apart from hosts Singapore, the tournament will also feature teams from Thailand, Japan and Australia, the reigning champions in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
The main draw of the tournament will start on the third day of competition with exactly 12 teams from each gender.
Three men’s teams already have a guaranteed spot in the main draw: hosts Singapore, reigning champions Australia and Mongolia, the best-ranked team in the FIBA 3×3 Federation Ranking as of November 2021.
The other 27 men’s teams will have to compete in the qualifying draw, consisting of nine pools of three teams each. Only the winners from each pool will earn a spot in the main draw.
Seven women’s teams have similarly gained automatic qualification to the main draw. Apart from hosts Singapore and reigning champions Australia, the five best-ranked teams in the FIBA 3×3 Federation Ranking as of last November – China, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Sri Lanka – have also qualified for the main draw.
Similar to the men’s category, the remaining 16 women’s teams will also need to compete in the qualifying draw which will include five pools. Only the winners from each pool will advance for a spot in the main draw.
The winners of the Asia Cup will also earn qualification for the FIBA 3×3 World Cup in 2023.
The FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2022 is estimated to welcome up to 1,500 spectators each day, and will open with its first session’s qualifying draw on Jul 6, 9am, where the women’s teams from Kazakhstan and Papua New Guinea will face each other.
Tickets start from $5 for those aged 18 and below as well as 55 and above, while individual and day passes range between $10 to $20.
The tickets can be purchased at SISTIC’s website.
