PETALING JAYA: The government is to propose a temporary operating budget of RM55.96 billion at the Dewan Rakyat sitting beginning tomorrow while it works out a proper new budget for next year.
The mini budget, to be tabled by finance minister Anwar Ibrahim, will be mainly to pay salaries of civil servants and other related operational expenditure to ensure the smooth operations of the government until the new budget is passed.
According to the Dewan Rakyat order paper, funds for the temporary budget will come from the development fund while the government re-works the proposed 2023 budget tabled by the previous government before Parliament was dissolved in November.
It is expected that the government will use a section of the Development Fund Act which allows supplementary budgets for unplanned expenditure to be tabled.
Anwar is expected to table a full new budget early next year.
Upon his appointment last month, Anwar said the government will look at the proposals in the budget tabled by the previous government and make the necessary changes before tabling his government’s budget.
The Dewan Rakyat will convene for the first time tomorrow since the conclusion of the 15th general election tomorrow.
The first item on the order paper is the election of a new Speaker and for MPs to be sworn in after that. There will also be the motion for a vote of confidence in Anwar’s leadership, to be tabled by deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof.
