After poor GE15 outing, MCA plans reforms to regain support – Free Malaysia Today

PETALING JAYA: MCA has resolved to implement strategic reforms to make future breakthroughs in general elections after being thrashed in GE15.
In one of the 18 resolutions adopted at the party’s general assembly, held behind closed doors, party members called for an in-depth evaluation of MCA’s election performance so that it could reform itself to regain voters’ support.
The party, a member of Barisan Nasional, was humiliated in the November polls when it only won two of 44 parliamentary seats contested, in Ayer Hitam through its president Wee Ka Siong while Wee Jeck Seng retained his Tanjung Piai seat. Both seats are in Johor.
The party also controls seven state seats.
Regarding tomorrow’s confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat, the party reaffirmed its pledge that its two MPs will support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
On reforms, MCA pledged to combat graft and abuse of power within itself and BN. However, it did not elaborate on this.
The party also supported the government’s decision to offer projects only via open tender to ensure transparency and integrity. It also backed the proposal to amend the Federal Constitution to allow children born overseas to Malaysian women to be given citizenship.
Besides that, it also asked the government to uphold its commitment to provide at least RM40 million annually in matching grants to Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology for the advancement of education for its students.
The party also called upon the government to institutionalise allocations for vernacular schools to ensure fair treatment to all schools.
